Apparently new enterprise- and SMB-class computers weren’t all that Lenovo had planned for CES 2010. Revealed just before the start of the show, the IdeaPad U1 Hybrid tablet PC is an 11.6-inch multitouch system that’s part laptop, part slate tablet and part smartbook.

and more details in this PC mag article "Lenovo's Tablet Docks to Form a Notebook"
After years of seeming to be on the "impossible" list, this new hyprid notebook/laptop/tablet from Lenovo is the closest I've seen yet to what I've been wanting for years; the ability to have what I love about my tablets and eReaders, the ability to have a "just right" sized reading screen in my hand, combined with what I love about my laptops, a great keyboard, vertical screen, ports, etc. I've long wondered/asked why I can't just "unsnap" my screen from my laptop when I just want to read or have the display with me or to show others?
As interesting as the product is, I thought it was equally struck by the last sentence in the PCmag article:
Before you get too excited, however, know that this innovation doesn't run cheap. The Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid starts at $999, which is about the combined cost of a laptop and a smartbook.
Until recently THAT would have also been on the What if the Impossible Isn't? list!!
While this is still not quite "just right" and likely very much a version one product, it is the closest I've seen to date and encourages me to keep asking for such "impossible" things. ;)
my comment got eaten. Anyway I wanted to say that it's nice to know that someone else also mentioned this as I had trouble finding the same info elsewhere
